Abandoned, lost, neglected? There's always a home at Animal Magic! In a perfect world there'd be no need for Animal Magic Rescue Centre. But Eva and Karl Harrison, who live at the centre with their parents, know that life isn't perfect. Every day there's a new arrival in need of their help. When soccer star Jake Adams cancels his appearance at Animal Magic's Open Day, Eva turns detective. But when she arrives at Jake's house all she finds is his ginger kitten, Charlie, locked out and miaowing on the doorstep...! Heart-warming animal stories, perfect for fans of Holly Webb and Magical Animal Friends. Editorial Reviews From School Library Journal Gr 1-3--Ella Harrison lives with her father, veterinarian mother, and older brother Caleb at the Animal Magic Rescue Center. The center is a haven for neglected cats and dogs, as well as the occasional rabbit, hamster, guinea pig, and horse. Unfortunately, their cranky neighbor Mrs. Brooks hates the noise and chaos created by the rescue center. She's willing to do just about anything to have it shut down. The Unwanted Puppy follows Ella as she rescues Honey, a golden retriever pup abandoned in a cardboard box. Ella worries about a petition started by Mrs. Brooks to shut down the rescue center. In The Home-Alone Kitten, the rescue center holds a one-year anniversary celebration. Troubles abound with another threat from Mrs. Brooks and the mysterious disappearance of soccer star Jake Adams, but Ella saves the day in the nick of time. Each title begins with an illustrated look at the rescue center's website, complete with a list of animals ready for adoption and the qualities of their ideal home. The action-driven plots are fast moving and the grayscale illustrations are chock-full of adorable furry animals. The narrative is descriptive, if lackluster, and the single-minded characters lack depth as they hurtle toward the inevitable happy ending. The short chapters are suitable for young readers. VERDICT Although the stories lack dimension, fans of Sue Bentley's "Magic" books will be delighted with the animal-centric plots and colorful, attractive covers.--Amy Seto Forrester, Denver Public Library
